Jesus' Words in Red “Living Water"

Jesus' Words in Red
“Living Water"

Living Water

Jesus said to the woman at the well…

"If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water ."
"Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

What is this Living Water?

Scripture is the best interpretation of Scripture.

When Jeremiah spoke the Word of the Lord in Chapter 2 he said…

"My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken me,
the spring of living water,
and have dug their own cisterns,
broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

The “Living Water” is God…

They have forsaken me, the Spring of Living Water.

Jesus says in John 7:37-39…

"If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him."  39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

In this passage we see the
“Living Water” is the Holy Spirit.

It is in Acts 2, we get a bigger picture of the Living
Water when the Spirit of God is poured out on the believers.

Jesus said this pouring out would empower the believer.

Jesus also told the disciples to wait
until they received this “out pouring”.

The actual out pouring came as a rushing and mighty wind,
another description Jesus gave of the Holy Spirit.

Zachariah 14 tells us this “Living Water”
will flow from Jerusalem.

Those who fight against the Lord will die of a plague.

And the nations who do not go to Jerusalem
for the Feast of Tabernacle will not get rain.

It is interesting in John 7 when Jesus is
talking about the streams of Living Water,
He is at the Feast of Tabernacle.

In Revelation 7 the Lamb at the center of the throne is the
Shepherd who will lead his sheep to the “Living Water”.

It is amazing that when the Holy Spirit was poured
out in Acts 2 the ones receiving the Spirit spoke
in the tongues or languages of other nations.

This is a powerful demonstration that the
Holy Spirit, the Living Water, was given to
everyone no matter what nation you might be from.

All this is fascinating and good back ground but
how does the Living Water effect you and me?

  Jesus said…

“The water I give him will become in him a
spring of water welling up to eternal life."

That is Good News.

 Romans 8 says…

If the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead
dwells in us we too shall rise from the dead.

Also we are told there are those controlled by
sinful nature and those controlled by the Spirit.

If you remember the scripture in Jeremiah 2 above
there are those who drink from their own well…

 Have dug their own cisterns”

Jesus tells the woman at the well…

"Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,
but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst.

The Holy Spirit is also called the Spirit of Truth.

For those who receive the Holy
Spirit will never thirst again.

Why because in you will be “Truth”.

Truth always satisfies.

It always refreshes us with liberty and freedom.

God has poured out His Spirit upon all flesh.

Take the drink that will fill you with Truth.

And allow the Holy Spirit to empower
you to be a Spring of Living Water.

Let the River of Truth, the
Word of God, flow from you.

You were made to be a vessel
filled with the Spirit of God.

Scripture Reading

John 4:7-15 NIV
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?"  8(His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

10 Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water ."

11 "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water ? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?"
13 Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water."
