Matthew 8:18-9:8
Jesus has Authority over the wind and waves
Jesus has Authority over demons
Jesus has Authority over sin
All Authority in heaven and earth is given to Jesus Matthew 28:18
The Kingdom of Heaven is secure because of Jesus’ Authority
Submitting to God’s Authority brings the Kingdom of Heaven to earth
There will always be those who doubt it
"You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Matthew 8:26
There will be those who don’t want it
Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region. Matthew 8:34
There will be those who reject His Authority
At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, "This fellow is blaspheming!" Matthew 9:3
And those who rejoice at His Authority
When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men. Matthew 9:8

Matthew 8:18-9:8
Matthew chapters 8-10…
Jesus brings the Kingdom of Heaven into people’s lives.
Jesus, after preaching
on the Kingdom of Heaven to the crowds,
demonstrated the power of the Kingdom to heal.
He healed a man with leprosy,
a Centurion’s servant
and a sick mother.
In doing so…
He fulfilled the prophetic words of Isaiah the prophet.
When evening came,
many who were demon-possessed were brought to him,
and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.
This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
"He took up our infirmities
and carried our diseases."
Matthew 8:16-17
The second set of stories starts with
a teacher of the law who said…
"Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."
Jesus replied,
"Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests,
but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
Matthew 8:19-20
Jesus never made any place on earth His home.
Jesus was a visitor on earth
because Heaven was His home.
Another disciple says…
"Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
But Jesus told him,
"Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."

As important as it is for us to see the works done by Jesus…
It is also important to see the personal response
to the Kingdom of Heaven.
When people came to Jesus,
He gave them two words…
“Follow Me”
Some accepted Him as a visitor.
Others rejected Him and wanted Him to go away.
Then there were some who left everything to…
Followed Him to the Kingdom of Heaven.
Jesus in these next three stories manifested
the coming of the Kingdom with Authority.
Jesus was sleeping in the boat
and a life threating storm was overtaking the boat.
The disciples woke Jesus and said “Save us”.
He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?"
Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves,
and it was completely calm.
The men were amazed and asked,
"What kind of man is this?
Even the winds and the waves obey him!"
Matthew 8:26-27
Why were they afraid?
They thought their life was going to end.
And the question, “What kind of Man is this?”
Jesus has the Authority to create the Earth
with the spoken word.
And Jesus by His word has the Authority
to control the earth.
The second story involves two violent,
demon possessed men.
We do not know how these men got this way…
But we do know demons could speak
through the mouth of these men.
We have many ways of handling those
oppressed and possessed by demons…
First, is we don’t call them demons.
Second, we use counseling and drugs.
Jesus demonstrated His Authority
over demons with one word, “Go”.
It is obvious the people living in that region
did not like the cost of losing the unclean pigs,
forbidden in the law of Moses.
Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus.
And when they saw him,
they pleaded with him to leave their region.
Matthew 8:34
The third story involves a paralytic man.
His residence is a small mat
and he could only lay on it.
The faith of his friends gives
him mobility to get to Jesus.
Jesus’ words are very interesting,
they are not to be healed which would be the obvious but…
"Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."
Matthew 9:2
“Take heart” implies hopelessness.
Sins are forgiven implies that his sin has immobilized Him.
The Authority to forgive sin draws a negative response.
At this,
some of the teachers of the law said to themselves,
"This fellow is blaspheming!"
Matthew 9:3
Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'? But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. . . ." Then he said to the paralytic, "Get up, take your mat and go home." And the man got up and went home. When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to men.
Matthew 9:4-8
Jesus has Authority over the wind and waves.
Jesus has Authority over demons.
Jesus has Authority over sin.

18 When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. 19 Then a teacher of the law came to him and said, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."
20 Jesus replied, "Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."
21 Another disciple said to him, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."
22 But Jesus told him, "Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead."
23 Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, "Lord, save us! We're going to drown!"
26 He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!"
28 When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29 "What do you want with us, Son of God?" they shouted. "Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?"
30 Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31 The demons begged Jesus, "If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs."
32 He said to them, "Go!" So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33 Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
9 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. 2 Some men brought to him a paralytic, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven."
3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, "This fellow is blaspheming!"
4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, "Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'? 6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. . . ."
