The Finger of God
The finger of God is an extension of all of Who and What He is
With the Finger of God He wrote on a wall
He wrote on tablets of stone, and in the dust of the ground
The Finger of God is all authority and power that every knee shall bow
Jesus saw the Father’s finger pointing to the sick and afflicted by the devil
And many were healed and delivered
19 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. John 5:19-23
We, too, must realize we can only do what we see the Father doing
With the same finger He calls us, He also demonstrates authority
The Finger of God
Jesus was being accused of driving
out demons by Beelzebub.
Jesus confronted the accusation
by saying…
"Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. 18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? Luke 11:17-18
Jesus recognized two kingdoms.
In verses 17-18…
The Kingdom of Satan.
The second kingdom is…
The Kingdom of God.
In verse 20 Jesus says…
But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,
then the kingdom of God has come to you.
Luke 11:20
These two kingdoms are at war with each other.
Jesus says the Kingdom of God comes
when He drives out demons by the finger of God…
God’s finger.
Maybe you have not thought
about your fingers lately.
You and I do some amazing things
with our fingers every day.
With our fingers we move and control many objects.
We even talk with our fingers.
So, what is the significance to the Finger of God?
The Finger of God – Power and Authority
When God brought the plague
of turning dust into gnats on Egypt…
The Magicians, (Who could not produce gnats)
said to Pharaoh…
"This is the finger of God."
But Pharaoh's heart was hard and he would not listen,
just as the Lord had said.
Exodus 8:19
The Finger of God – Law or Commandments
In Exodus 31:18 and Deuteronomy 9:10…
We read God wrote the Ten Commandments
on two tablets of stone with His finger.
When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the Testimony, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.
The Finger of God – Judgement
In Daniel 5…
King Belshazzar (son of King Nebuchadnezzar)
gave a banquet and brought out the gold goblets
taken from the Temple of God in Jerusalem
and all his guests drank from them.
Suddenly the fingers of a human hand appeared
and wrote on the plaster of the wall,
near the lampstand in the royal palace.
Daniel 5:5
Daniel was brought in to tell
the meaning of the writing.
Daniel 5:25-31…
25 "This is the inscription that was written:
MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN
26 "This is what these words mean:
Mene : God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end.
27 Tekel : You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
28 Peres : Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians."
29 Then at Belshazzar's command, Daniel was clothed in purple,
a gold chain was placed around his neck,
and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.
30 That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians, was slain, 31 and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.
The Finger of God – Authority
In the New Testament it uses the term the finger of God
to describe the authority to drive out demons.
But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,
then the kingdom of God has come to you.
Luke 11:20
The Finger of God – Christ the Devine Legislator
Jesus wrote in the ground with His finger
when the accusers of the women
caught in adultery was brought to Him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."
8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
11 "No one, sir," she said.
"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared.
"Go now and leave your life of sin."
John 8:6-11
It is with the finger of God…
Authority is displayed as an extension
of His whole being.
The finger of God has the power to…
Set free and to bind up.
Because by the finger of God…
Righteous judgement and law is written and established.
With the finger of God, He communicates.
When it comes to spiritual warfare…
We need to keep an eye on the finger of God.
When He point to you and I
and calls us to do something…
That same finger that pointed to you
also has the authority for you
to carry out that calling.
What is He binding and losing in order
for His Kingdom to come in earth as it is in heaven?
You may not see writing on the wall
or in the dirt or on tablets but…
He is carrying out what He has written to us.
Jesus saw the Father’s finger pointing
to the sick and afflicted by the devil…
And many were healed and delivered.
We, too, must realize…
We can only do what we see the Father doing.
Scripture Reading
Luke 11:17-20 NIV
17 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them: "Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. 18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebub. 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come to you.
John 5:19-23 NIV
