Jesus’ Encounters with Demons Part 7 of 7
Healing a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath (Luke 13:10-17)
When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity." 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
He called her
Told her she was free
Laid His hands on her
Her response was immediate, she straighten and praised God
See the way Peter tells Cornelius about Jesus
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. Acts 10:38
“healing all who were under the power of the devil”
The devil brings physical affliction upon believers and unbelievers
The text tells us, “because God was with him”
Deliverance from the devil and affliction is possible
How do we get out from under the power of the devil?
We walk with God, Emmanuel, God with us
Jesus’ Encounters with Demons Part 7 of 7
Healing a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath (Luke 13:10-17)
Jesus was teaching in the synagogue
and saw a woman…
And a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years.
She was bent over and could not straighten up at all.
12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her,
"Woman, you are set free from your infirmity."
13 Then he put his hands on her,
and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
Luke 13:11-13
Crippled by a spirit for 18 years…
This is the last of three miracles
where the actual number of years was
given in regard to the length of suffering.
1. In this case, 18 years (Luke 13:11)
2. A woman with an issue of blood, 12 years (Matthew 9:20)
3. A crippled man, 38 years (John 5:5)
The woman was probably a believer.
She was attending the synagogue,
probably a faithful member.
Jesus referred to her as a daughter of Abraham.
Verse 16
In spite of this…
She had been bound by Satan
for nearly two decades.
Many have made a big deal of whether
a believer can be possessed by a demon.
The question should be…
Can a believer be influenced
or afflicted by a demon?
It is clear in this story the devil or demons
can oppress and physically afflict a child of God.
There are two classic examples
of this satanic physical affliction in the Scriptures…
1. The example of Job
So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord
and afflicted Job with painful sores
from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.
Job 2:7-8
2. The example of Paul
To keep me from becoming conceited
because of these surpassingly great revelations,
there was given me a thorn in my flesh,
a messenger of Satan, to torment me.
2 Corinthians 12:7
In this case…
We see deliverance was connected to physical affliction
and Jesus healed her in a simple way.
When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her,
"Woman, you are set free from your infirmity."
13 Then he put his hands on her,
and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
He called her.
Told her she was free.
Laid His hands on her.
Her response was immediate…
She straighten and praised God.
See the way Peter tells Cornelius about Jesus.
How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power,
and how he went around doing good and healing
all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.
Acts 10:38
“Healing all who were under the power of the devil”
The devil brings physical affliction
upon believers and unbelievers.
The text tells us…
“Because God was with him”
Deliverance from the devil
and affliction is possible
How do we get out from
under the power of the devil?
We walk with God,
Emmanuel,

Scripture Reading
Luke 13:10-17 NIV
10 On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, 11 and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. 12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are set free from your infirmity." 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
14 Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue ruler said to the people, "There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath."
15 The Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Doesn't each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? 16 Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?"
17 When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing
