Jesus’ Encounters with Demons Part 1 of 7
Jesus was in the synagogue teaching
The service was interrupted
In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 "Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are - the Holy One of God!" Luke 4:33-34

It is interesting to hear the congregation’s response
The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching — and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.Mark 1:27-28
Very doubtful this man was a first-time synagogue attender
He was someone people could see had issues
But were unable to know how to help him
Do you know someone in your church who may be coming for hope

Jesus’ Encounters with Demons Part 1 of 7
Seven times we see Jesus encountered
demons in the Gospels.
The first time is in…
Mark 1:23-28 and Luke 4:31-36
We get the location of this encounter…
Luke 4:31
Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee,
and on the Sabbath began to teach the people.
They are in the town where Peter lived.
Luke 4:38
We also see Jesus was in the synagogue teaching.
The service was interrupted.
In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 "Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are - the Holy One of God!"
Luke 4:33-34
A man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit.
The Greek reads…
“A man which had a spirit devil of an unclean.”
The word “spirit” is pneuma
NT:4151 pneu=ma
pneuma (pnyoo'-mah); from NT:4154;
a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze;
by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul,
(by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc.,
or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God,
Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit:
The word “devil” is daimonion
NT:1140 daimo/nion
daimonion (dahee-mon'-ee-on);
neuter of a derivative of NT:1142;
a daemonic being; by extension a deity:
The words of an “unclean”
NT:169 ka/qartos
akathartos (ak-ath'-ar-tos);
from NT:1 (as a negative particle)
and a presumed derivative of NT:2508 (meaning cleansed);
impure (ceremonially, morally [lewd] or specially, [demonic])
Unlike the inner organs of a person,
what was inside this man was like the soul or spirit,
mental disposition of a person.
The demon was like a breath of air
you cannot see, but can feel and hear it.
The demon has the ability
to communicate through this man.
"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth?
Have you come to destroy us?
I know who you are — the Holy One of God!"
Mark 1:24
Notice this is the first of three occasions
when evil spirits gave testimony that
Jesus was the Son of God.
The demon or evil spirit recognized Jesus
as a natural man…
“Jesus of Nazareth”
The demons or evil spirit recognized Jesus
as the spiritual man…
“I know who you are — the Holy One of God!”
The evil spirit asked a rhetorical question…
"Let us alone!
What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth?
Did You come to destroy us?
I know who You are — the Holy One of God!"
Luke 4:34 NKJV
The evil spirit understood who Jesus was…
But his words “Let us alone!”
cause us to question whether the demon
was terrified of Jesus.
Or, commanding Jesus to leave them alone
because Jesus had nothing to do with
what the demon was doing.
The matter is settled when Jesus said…
"Be quiet!" Jesus said sternly. "Come out of him!"
Luke 4:35
At Jesus’ command…
The demon through a temper tantrum.
Then the demon threw the man down
before them all and came out
without injuring him.
Luke 4:35
The evil spirit shook the man violently
and came out of him with a shriek.
Mark 1:26
There was a fight going on in this man’s body…
Maybe because the man also heard the words of Jesus
and it gave him hope to resist the demon.
Maybe the demon came to the synagogue to disrupt
and the man came to the synagogue to find freedom.
It could have been this man
hearing the words of Jesus giving him hope…
And the demon was trying to diminish the hope.
This battle in the man became more than
what was being said in the mind…
It became vocal and all could hear.
We can speculate…
But what we do know is Jesus had
the authority to drive out the demon.
The man was free from the internal deception
he had given his life to.
Church got a little messy that day.
It is interesting to hear
the congregation’s response.
The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching — and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
Mark 1:27-28
Very doubtful this man was
a first-time synagogue attender.
He was someone people could see had issues…
But were unable to know how to help him.
Do you know someone in your church
who may be coming for hope…
But the demons inside of them is disruptive.
If so, maybe deliverance is the answer.
Scripture Reading
Mark 1:21-28 NIV
21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!"
25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching — and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
Luke 4:31-37 NIV
31 Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath began to teach the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority.
33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an evil spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 "Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are — the Holy One of God!"
35 "Be quiet!" Jesus said sternly. "Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
36 All the people were amazed and said to each other, "What is this teaching? With authority and power he gives orders to evil spirits and they come out!" 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.
