Covid-19 the War “Duck and Cover” is a Practice Not a Life Style

Covid-19 the War
“Duck and Cover” is a Practice Not a Life Style

Duck and Cover was the school drills of the Cold war
Luke 19 gives us a story of three servant
Two servants, in a time of fear, occupied with the potential God gave them
But one Ducked in fear and Covered the money he was given
As I have studied the Bible all my life I see a message from God
That will not only show us how to have peace with God
But a message, if followed, that will make you
Healthy, wealthy, and wise, all with the right priorities
War changes things
The war against the Coronavirus
The Cold War against Communism and its doctrine
The War against sin
All wars must be fought
But at the same time occupy till He comes with your full potential
Don’t let fear cause you to put what God gave you in a hiding place

Duck and Cover was a Practice Not a Life Style

We can be at war and be productive.

Duck and Cover was a practice not a life style.

Many people have said they have never seen
anything like the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Many have asked me if I
had ever seen anything like it.

As I scanned over 60 years
of my life to find an answer…

I did find something that the
Covid19 Pandemic reminded me of.

The Coronavirus is an enemy
that we find ourselves at war with.

We don’t know where or when it might strike.

We know we must be alert and ready to fight.

The American way of living is
shifting from peace time to war.

I was born after WWII and in
the beginning of the Cold War.

The Cold War began not too long after
World War II ended in 1945.

Although, the Soviet Union was an important
member of the Allied Powers, there
was great distrust between the Soviet
Union and the rest of the Allies.

The Allies were concerned with the brutal
leadership of Joseph Stalin as well
as the spread of communism.

The Cold War came to an end with
the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

I remember as a child the “Arms Race”,
the building and testing of nuclear bombs,
the H-bomb (hydrogen bomb).

Two super powers, American and the Soviet testing
spewed radioactive waste into the atmosphere.

As a boy, I remember the practice attack drills in school.

They called them Duck and Cover.

The name of our enemy was Communism.

Not only did America fear Communism,
the church feared its doctrine.

The Bible tells us that there will be wars and
roomers of wars before the end of the world.

Christians thought the nuclear bomb
would be the fulfillment of 2 Peter 3:12…

As you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat.

America increased its defense spending
four times to fight the Cold War.

My family for a few years lived in East Toledo,
a very short distance from the oil refineries.

We knew that if America was under
attack, we would be the hot spot.

So I remember the fear of war…

 The unseen enemy.

Living life under the threat of war.

As I look back, I remember the dooms
day message preached in the churches.

The threat that the Communist would
come and take away our Bibles
and put Christians to death.

This fear had a very negative
effect on the Church and Christians.

If the end of the world was coming…

 Why plan for tomorrow?

The church had one message…

 Repent before the end comes.

The good that came out of all this is many
did repent, but there was a very negative side.

Many Christians settled for a mediocre life style.

They lived a Duck and Cover lifestyle.

The potential of God’s people was not reached.

God’s Word talks a lot about money.

Warnings about trusting in it and
harmful attitudes money affects us with.

But God’s Word also warns about being
slothful and much of God’s words
are meant to bring us out of poverty.

The Church had an attitude of wait till Jesus comes.

It was the Duck and Cover lifestyle.

Not occupy till I come.

Jesus tells us a story in Luke 19 about a Nobleman…

And he called his ten servants,
and delivered them ten pounds,
and said unto them,
Occupy till I come.
Luke 19:13

The story tell us the Nobleman
gave three servants money.

Two of them used the money
and had a profit to show for it.

But one servant because of fear did nothing
with the money and this angered the Nobleman.

Lord, behold, here is thy pound,
which I have kept laid up in a napkin
 Luke 19:20

It was the Duck and Cover lifestyle.

As we try to contain and fight the
Coronavirus, we have seen productivity
of Americans down to a critical point.

For America to see the blessings
we had before the virus…

We will have to figure out how to deal
with our fear, to have a healthy concern
and at the same time become productive.

I look back at the effects of the Cold War on the church
and think what if we handled our fear of Communism
with a message of repentance.

And also occupied as if our children and
grandchildren would be generations till Jesus came.

What if Christians had not settles for mediocre
employment and worked to fulfill their greatest potential?

I believe the church and its people
today would have great wealth.

Wealth we could be honoring
our Lord with till He comes.

As I have studied the Bible all my life,
I see a message from God that will not
only show us how to have peace with God…

But a message, if followed, will make you
healthy, wealthy, and wise, all with the right priorities.

War changes things.

The war against the Coronavirus.

The war against Communism and its doctrine.

The War against sin.

All wars must be fought but at the same time
occupy till He comes with your full potential.

Don’t let fear cause you to put what
God gave you in a hiding place.

Duck and Cover was a practice not a life style.

We can be at war and be productive.

Scripture Reading

Luke 19:12-27 KJV

12 He said therefore, A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom, and to return.
13 And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
14 But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.
15 And it came to pass, that when he was returned, having received the kingdom, then he commanded these servants to be called unto him, to whom he had given the money, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.
16 Then came the first, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained ten pounds.
17 And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.
18 And the second came, saying, Lord, thy pound hath gained five pounds.
19 And he said likewise to him, Be thou also over five cities.
20 And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin:
21 For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.
22 And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:
23 Wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury?
24 And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.
25(And they said unto him, Lord, he hath ten pounds.)
26 For I say unto you, That unto every one which hath shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him.
27 But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.

Social Distancing Keeping it Together

Social Distancing
Keeping it Together

Social Distancing is keeping us apart Physically
So how do we keep it together Socially
The Apostle Paul was limited to the length of his prison chain
He did not let the distance stop him from
Devotion to prayer
Reaching out to his friends and loved ones with encouragement
And making opportunity to wisely answer the questions of others
We too need to keep it together
Social Distancing should not relationally distance us
From God loved ones and others
What are you doing today to keep relationships together?

Keeping it Together

Social Distancing is keeping us apart

I miss my kids and grandkids
coming over after church on Sundays.

I miss Sunday mornings at church.

I miss getting together with friends.

I miss going out in public
and interacting with people.

With all the distancing how
do we keep it all together?

The Apostle Paul was a good example
of how to keep it together when you
are confined to social distancing.

Technically speaking, the Apostle Paul was under
arrest for about five years during his ministry.

Although about two and one half years of
this period was spent in a literal prison cell

The rest was spent either under house
arrest or being escorted by a Roman soldier
from Jerusalem to Rome.

Here are three things Paul did to keep it
together while confined to Social Distancing…

1.     Prayer

2.     Kept in contact with those in his life

3.     Acted in wisdom with people he did not know

Paul talked about prayer as
something to be “devoted” to.

Paul said about prayer…

 “Be watchful and thankful.”

Let me start with being
“Thankful” because Psalms 100 says…

Enter His gates with thanksgiving
and His courts with praise;
give thanks to Him and praise His name.
For the LORD is good and His love endures forever;
His faithfulness continues through all generations.
Psalms 100:4-5

God whose love endures forever
and His faithfulness is to all
generations gives us a lot to
be hopeful and thankful for.

When Jesus teaches us how to pray, He also
tells us to start our prayers with thanksgiving.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Matthew 6:9

When we say hallowed be your name,
we are not making God more holy
or purifying Him because He is and
cannot be any more holy or hallowed.

One of the greatest examples of this
is found in Revelation 4 when the
24 elders are seen standing before God.

Day and night they never stop saying:
"Holy, holy , holy
is the Lord God Almighty,
who was, and is, and is to come."

Whenever the living creatures give glory,
honor and thanks to Him who sits on the
throne and who lives for ever and ever,
10 the twenty-four elders fall down
before Him who sits on the throne,
and worship Him who lives for ever and ever.
They lay their crowns before the throne and say:
"You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
and have their being."
Revelation 4:8-5:1

Imagine the throne of God…

And one by one you move from one elder
to another and see from 24 different
positions a different facet of the glory of God.

Why do they do it day and night?

Because the revealing of God’s glory never ends.

The glory of God’s creation and how He
holds it all together is forever unfolding to us.

When our prayers start with thanksgiving,
we focus on His glory, goodness and grace.

Most of us get our information from the media as we
watch for what is happening in the world around us.

When we devote ourselves to prayer with
thanksgiving we are watching for how God
sees things from His Kingdom of Heaven.

This perspective gives us hope and courage.

Paul kept in contact with those in his life.

From Paul’s confinement of prison, he
wrote letters to the saints at Philippians,
Philemon, and Colossians and maybe more.

Paul kept encouraging his social friends even
though his chains keep him at a distance.

I am sure Paul would have used the phone,
Facebook, emails, letters and zoom to
stay in touch and give encouragement
if he had what we have today.

Paul acted in wisdom with people he did not know.

Paul kept the main thing the main
thing, “The mystery of Christ”.

But Paul knew he had to be wise in the way he
communicated the message to those outside the faith.

One of my greatest frustrations is to see
someone in need and not know how to
use that opportunity to show them how
Christ is the answer they need.

For Paul to say…

“Let your conversation be always full of grace”

…causes me to think.

Paul had a lot of people treat him wrong.

He was abused by people, yet he did
not want any room for bitterness or
anger, but to be “Full of Grace”.

Paul was like a cook who never put the
meat on the grill without seasoning.

Paul took time to bring out the
flavor of his conversations.

His words were not just words.

Like the Psalmist says…

Taste and see that the LORD is good;
blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.
Psalms 34:8

Paul’s conversations caused people to want more.

We, too, can be successful when
confined to Social Distancing.

If we…

Devote ourselves in prayer to
watching and thanksgiving.

Keep in contact with those in our life –
Reach out to encourage others daily
Hebrews 3:13

Acted in wisdom with people we do not know
– Show grace and seasoning with your answers.

Social Distancing is keeping us apart Physically.

So how do we keep it together Socially?

The Apostle Paul was limited to
the length of his prison chain.

He did not let the distance stop him from…

Devotion to prayer.

Reaching out to his friends and
loved ones with encouragement.

And making opportunity to wisely
answer the questions of others.

We too need to keep it together.

Social distancing should not relationally
distance us from God loved ones and others.

What are you doing today to keep relationships together?

Scripture Reading

Colossians 4:2-6 NIV

2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. 5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
