What Happens to the Church When Christ is Not Center
You Can Have the Mind of God
I Corinthians 2
The Church in Corinth
had a lot of wrong thinking
Paul starts out in
his first letter to them telling them
“We have the mind of Christ”
Many of us are insecure
by the way people speak
We are insecure by
the knowledge of God
What we need to
discern, what God thinks about life around us
Are able to be
understood by every believer, not just preachers and teacher
Your words may be
like drool that falls out of your mouth
But that does not mean God does not want you
to know His mind on the matter
We may be babies in
Christ that still drool
But that does not
mean we cannot understand the Mind of God
God has given you His
Spirit
So you can know the Mind
of God
You Can Have the Mind
of God
I Corinthians 2
When Paul came to Corinth
he had a simple message…
For I resolved to know
nothing while I was
with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.
The message of Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
Paul reminds the Church in his first letter to
them after leaving, that he did not come as a
smooth speaker with one liner words of wisdom.
Paul did not come with boldness and arrogance.
Paul was well aware of the unpopular
message of Jesus and the persecution he
and others suffered for preaching Christ.
Paul reminded the Church in Corinth, and us,
that the Message of
Jesus and His crucifixion
is the Center and Foundation of the Church.
This is not to say there are not great Spiritual Truths.
There are lots of Spiritual Truths.
So once we have the Truth of Jesus Christ and Him
Crucified, how to move on to other Spiritual Truths.
Paul lays out the personal responsibility of
discovering the Truth about God yourself.
You and I are to grow in the secret wisdom of God.
How do we do that?
"For who has
known the mind of the Lord
that he may instruct
him?"
1 Corinthians 2:16
We are not God’s teachers no matter
how good we think we sound.
The world is in a lot of trouble because people
are trying to tell us how God should do things.
If we are going to be spiritual, two things are required…
One, we judge all spiritual things,
we cannot camp out on a corner of
the truth, all truth of God is important.
The second thing is man’s judgment does
not make our spiritual understanding right
or wrong, in the end it is God’s judgment.
The spiritual man
makes judgments about all things,
but he himself is not
subject to any man's judgment:
It might feel a little intimidating when we
are around others and around God.
We may want to take a back seat and not get involved.
I get that there are times I want to keep my mouth
shut because I don’t want to be questioned.
There are times I don’t want to share God’s Word because
I am not sure God would think I did a good enough job.
In Corinth and in the Church in Corinth a lot of
things were happening that got them off track…
Things a believer in Christ should be able to discern.
So Paul says…
"For who has known the mind of the Lord
that he may instruct
him?"
But we have the mind
of Christ.
Paul says to those believers, as well as, us…
“We have the mind of
Christ”
As believers, we have been given the Spirit of God.
Because the Spirit of God lives in us, we have the
ability to know and understand the mind of God…
What we need to know about God,
What we need to discern, what
God thinks about life around us,
Are able to be understood by every
believer not just preachers and teacher.
Your words may be like drool that falls out of
your mouth, but that does not mean God does
not want you to know His mind on the matter.
We may be babies in Christ that
still drool but that does not mean we
cannot understand the Mind of God.
God has given you His Spirit.
So you can know what God thinks on every matter.
Because what happens around you
and in the Church matters.
Have this mind in you
which is also in Christ.
Philippians
2:5
Christ’s Mind was not
on the things
of the flesh, but the Mind of the Father.
You and I are not to be mindless
but have the Mind of Christ.
Scripture Reading
1 Corinthians 2 NIV
2:1 When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with
eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about
God. 2 For I resolved to know nothing
while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in
weakness and fear, and with much trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were
not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's
power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power.
6 We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the
mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are
coming to nothing. 7 No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has
been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. 8 None of
the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have
crucified the Lord of glory. 9 However, as it is written:
"No eye has seen,
no ear has heard,
no mind has conceived
what God has prepared for those who love him"—
10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within
him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God,
that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak,
not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit,
expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. 14 The man without the Spirit does not
accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to
him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15
The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not
subject to any man's judgment:
16 "For who has known the mind of the Lord
that he may instruct him?"
