You Are What You Eat

Was it the fruit or the lie that caused us to die?

Adam and Eve were commanded by God not to

eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Was it the fruit of the tree or the command of

God that opened their minds to good and evil?

What was the experience of eating

from the other trees in the garden?

There was freedom because God said

they could eat the fruit of those trees.

There was pleasure in every bite, not a

thought of harm or bad things, just enjoyment.

'Man does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'

Think about it...

There was freedom because God said

they could eat the fruit of those trees.

There was pleasure in every bite, not a

thought of harm or bad things, just enjoyment.

What made the fruit of the

tree of knowledge different?

Was it a poison fruit?

If so Adam and Eve would

have gotten sick or died.

Did the fruit have some drug effect that

altered the mind and the way they thought?

It seems from the text, the issue is not the

fruit of the tree as much as what God said.

The serpent was more crafty, cunning,

 he was knowledgeable of good and evil.

He put the question in the mind of

Eve by saying, “Did God really say?”

This questioning was new to Eve.

To his point there was no question

just enjoying all God’s provisions.

They had lots of food and sex and had no shame.

  

They lived in a world of innocence.

In Genesis 3:22, God says they were

now like God knowing good and evil.

Adam and Eve were created in the image of God,

 but only knew the goodness of life that God provided.

When they disobeyed God,

the conscience was activated.

You and I, without eating of the fruit

of a tree are aware of good and evil.

It is the conscience inside of every one of us.

We intuitively know evil when we disobey God.

There is a shame, a hiding from God,

when we do things that hurt us or others.

It is activated each time we question God.

We become aware of good and evil.

The difference of God having the knowledge

of good and evil and us is…

God knows what is best for us.

And we are tempted to question and do evil.

Genesis 3:1-13 NIV

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"

2 The woman said to the serpent, "We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, 'You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'"

4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, "Where are you?"

10 He answered, "I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."

11 And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?"

12 The man said, "The woman you put here with me — she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it."

13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, "What is this you have done?"

The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate."

Philippians 4:4-9 NIV

4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
