Train Up a Child
Slave or Free
It starts with Love God,
LOVE IS LEARNED!!!
The Children of Israel feared God and had to learn to love Him
The foundation to maturity must be LOVE
Love that not only shows approval
But disapproval of actions and attitudes because the child is loved
Slavery to sin is hard to break free of
Hebrews 12:11
No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
As parents, our children must see our love for them as sons and daughters
Our children must see what we do for them is for their good
It is sometimes hard for us to see God the Father’s love in times of discipline
So it will be hard at times for our children to see our love in times of discipline
So, make sure at all times your love is seen as working for your child’s good
Slave or Free
Proverbs 22:6…
Train a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not turn from it.
From Egypt to the Promise land
From Slaves to Freedom
From Fear to Love
Like the Children of God, we too must go through a process
A process of removing the fear and bondage
In order that we might live in Love and Freedom
Sadly, we are born with a selfish nature
that causes us to act foolish.
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child;
The rod of correction will drive it far from him.
Proverbs 22:15 NKJV
Discipline in love brings correction.
Proverbs 3:12; Hebrews 12:6
The foundation to maturity must be LOVE.
Love that not only shows approval, but…
Disapproval of actions and attitudes
because the child is loved.
Slavery to sin is hard to break free of.
Hebrews 12 is a powerful chapter on Discipline.
Verse 4 tells us it is a struggle…
“In your struggle against sin…”
Verse 5 is so important…
And you have forgotten that word of encouragement
that addresses you as son
Hebrews 12:5
There is a big difference between
a slave’s master and a Father.
Sin tries to enslave us…
But a loving Father tries to free us.
Breaking free from sin is not easy.
God freed the children from their masters
in Egypt, but they were still slaves…
Controlled by fear.
The hardships of discipline are necessary
to change our desire.
Many times, we are not willing to put upon ourselves
the necessary hardships to change us.
We want our environment to change…
But we are not strong enough in mind and heart
to resist and find inner freedom.
Proverbs 3:12 is quoted here in Hebrews
to let us know that under the old
and the new covenants God says…
“My son”.
Hebrews 12:5-6…
"My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."
God as a Father disciplines us for our good.
Hebrews 12:10…
Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.
Loving discipline is always for our good
no matter how hard it might seem.
Hebrews 12:11…
No discipline
seems pleasant at the time, but painful.
Later on, however, it produces a harvest
of righteousness
and peace for those who have been trained by it.
As parents, our children must see our love
for them as sons and daughters.
Our children must see what
we do for them is for their good.
It is sometimes hard for us to see
God the Father’s love in times of discipline.
So it will be hard at times for our children
to see our love in times of discipline.
So, make sure at all times your love is seen
as working for your child’s good.
Proverbs 22:6…
Train a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not turn from it.
Training in the way our children
should go is to train them in love.
Love is the thing we should never depart from.
Our greatest example is our Heavenly Father.
Because God is Love…
Love is the way to maturity and freedom.
Scripture Reading
6 Train a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not turn from it.
Hebrews 12:4-11 NIV
4 In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. 5 And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons:
"My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."
7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8 If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10 Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
