What is Truth?

What is Truth?

So what is truth?

It is Right

It is Perfection

Truth is Absolute

It is Honest

Truth is the opposite of a lie

Jesus made this bold claim

Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."  John 8:31-32 NIV

All of us have words that we use often.

For some they are what I call filler words.

I worked with a man who used the
”f word” in almost every sentence.

For others the words they speak over and over
again reveal a deep conviction or passion.

One of the Apostle John’s
repeated words of passion is “truth”.

52 times in his Gospel
11 times in 1 John
5 times in 2 John
6 times in 3 John

For John, Truth and Jesus Christ were one and the same.

"full of grace and truth" John 1:14

John quotes Jesus "I am . . . the truth" John 14:6

"Thy word is truth" John 17:17

John is the one who records the
conversation Jesus had with Pilate.

“for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world,
to testify to the truth . Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."
"What is truth?" Pilate asked. John 18:37-38

According to John, it becomes very
clear truth is found in Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is the standard of Truth.

Pilate asked, “What is truth?”

Many ask this question with sarcasm.

These are people who believe truth
is relative to a given situation.

In other words, there is “no absolute truth” and these
people, for the most part, believe there is “no God”.

So what is truth?

It is Right

It is Perfection

Truth is Absolute

It is Honest

Truth is the opposite of a lie

Jesus made this bold claim…

Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."  John 8:31-32 NIV

There are 2 definitions of freedom.

The world’s definition which says freedom
is the liberty to do whatever you want.

This type of freedom will pay a price in the end.

With a cost too great to pay.

God’s definition of freedom says truth will set you free.

This type of freedom will pay the price in the beginning.

With a cost of only the things you don’t need.

Truth is a character builder.

Where does your definition of truth come from?
