Matthew
Introduction of the King
If you were born in the last 25 years
You will see the world very differently than those who are 65 and older
You will see the new world
You will accept things as if it is the way it has always been
Because the now is all you have experienced
But if you are 65 or older, you will have seen changes for the better and for decline
Much of the new we see today is a destruction of the foundations of the old
Leaving the new with not much to stand on
The introduction of Jesus is an introduction of the new
Jesus is the new King / Messiah, to save His people
He is a new Moses, to lead His people
He is the new, God with us
He is the new connection between God and humanity
The new connection between earth and heaven
Matthew introduced Jesus from the linage of Abraham,
Luke from Adam, the son of God
What is new is Jesus built upon the truth and values from creation
Whether you are 25 or 65, we are living in the new
And should not destroy the truth and values from creation
Jesus is King of the Jews and He is King of Creation
He has come to save His people from Abraham
And from Adam
Matthew
Introduction of the King
Matthew introduced us to…
The King of the Kingdom of Heaven in Matthew 1 & 2.
An amazing connection between heaven and earth.
A connection between humanity and God
takes place in the womb of a young woman named Mary.
The story of Jesus Christ’s birth in Matthew
is seen through the eyes of Joseph
at the time Mary became conceived by the Holy Spirit.
Joseph was told…
an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
"Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife,
because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 1:20-21
The virgin birth of Jesus reveals…
Jesus’ connection to Heaven.
In Matthew’s account, Joseph was connected
to the humanity connection to earth.
Yet, Joseph is not the father of Jesus.
The Genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1
is not from Mary’s side, but from Joseph.
The genealogy ends with…
and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary,
of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
In Matthew 1:16…
Mary being the wife of Joseph
connects Jesus to His humanity.
The genealogy in Matt. 1:1f is traced through Joseph, Jesus’ legal (though not natural) father, and it establishes His claim and right to the throne of David (v. 6).
The genealogy in Luke 3:23-38 is evidently that of Mary, though some believe it is also Joseph’s, by assuming that Matthew (Matt 1:15) and Matthew (Luke 3:24) were the same person and Jacob (Matt 1:16) and Eli (Luke 3:23) were brothers (one being Joseph’s father and the other his uncle).
Luke connected Jesus’
humanity not only to Abraham
but back to Adam, the son of God.
Luke 3:38
Matthew tells us Mary’s son
will be named Jesus…
“Because he will save his
people from their sins."
Matthew 1:21
This revels Jesus as Messiah thru the line of David.
He also will be…
"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel"
-which means, "God with us."
Matthew 1:23
Although Matthew clearly speaks of Jesus
being king of the Jews,,,
Luke reveals…
Jesus came to save all people from their sins
and Jesus will be Immanuel, God with us,
to the Gentiles as well as the Jews.
In Matthew 2 we see…
Matthew clearly was sharing the account of Jesus
from and to Jewish people when he
speaks of the account of Herod…
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,
during the time of King Herod,
Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked,
"Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?
Matthew 2:1-2
Matthew breaks down the Genealogy of Jesus
according to the exile to Babylon…
Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David,
fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon,
and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.
Matthew 1:17
Matthew points out Jesus at birth
fled into exile to Egypt
and the prophetic scriptures pertaining
to those things to come
Matthew 2:6;18
Jesus becomes a type of a New Moses.
It is important that we realize
the world outside of the children of Abraham
did not know the God of creation.
So, for us to understand the God of creation…
We need to pay close attention
to the things God has said
to the children of Abraham.
The Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke
help us to see God’s overall picture
for all His creation.
If you are not a Jew…
You, too, can see and accept Jesus Christ as King
and the benefits of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Scripture Reading NIV
Matthew 1:17-2:2
17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.
18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"-which means, "God with us."
24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?
Psalms 2:6-9
6 "I have installed my King
on Zion, my holy hill."
7 I will proclaim the decree of the Lord:
He said to me, "You are my Son;
today I have become your Father.
8 Ask of me,
and I will make the nations your inheritance,
the ends of the earth your possession.
9 You will rule them with an iron scepter;
you will dash them to pieces like pottery."
Isaiah 9:6-7
6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David's throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.
Daniel 2:44
44 "In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.
Daniel 7:13-14
13 "In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
1 Corinthians 15:24-25
24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
Revelation 11:15
15 The seventh angel sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, which said:
"The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ,
and he will reign for ever and ever."
