Matthew
Jesus, began to Announcement the Kingdom
“The Sermon on the Mount”
Jesus started with a series of Blessings to those who have the right character
Blessed are…
the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, those who are persecuted because of righteousness
And these are the Blessings…
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
for they will be comforted.
for they will inherit the earth.
for they will be filled.
for they will be shown mercy.
for they will see God.
for they will be called sons of God.
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
The Beatitudes are just the introduction to Jesus’ Kingdom of Heaven Message
The next two and a half chapters will open the Gates of Heaven even wider
Compare your attitudes to those Jesus spoke of on the mount
Note the 1st and the last have the same blessing,
For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven
The citizens of Heaven are blessed
Matthew
Jesus, Began to Announcement the Kingdom
Chapters 3-7…
The Kingdom of Heaven is announced.
Jesus, after being led by the Spirit into the wilderness
where He was tempted by the Devil…
Began to preach the Kingdom.
From that time on Jesus began to preach,
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."
Matthew 4:17
Jesus was led into the wilderness
for 40 days by the Holy Spirit.
Then at the end of that 40 days…
He was tempted by the Devil.
After that He was attended by angels.
The word “attended” in the Greek is diakoneo
which is the word used for deacon.
Here we see the beginning of the Church.
Jesus filled with the Spirit
is the head of the Church,
the Great Shepherd.
We see the first deacons of
the church were the angels.
We see the angels continue to be deacons
to the very end as seen in
the Book of Revelation.
Note who the letters to the
Seven Churches are written to…
It was the Angel of each church.
Matthew gave us a quick overview
of the things that happened after
the wilderness experience…
From that time on Jesus began to preach,
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."
Matthew 4:17
The line was drawn between
the Kingdom of Satan
and the Kingdom of Heaven.
Luke says…
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit,
and news about him spread through the whole countryside.
He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.
Luke 4:14-15
During this time,
there were men who received
His message.
Jesus invites them to followed Him
at the cost of leaving family and occupations
to help Him build the Kingdom…
Who are later called Apostles.
They continued to build the
Kingdom through the Church.
In Matthew 4:23-25…
We see the crowds following Jesus.
Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed,
those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them.
Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem,
Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
Matthew gave us an overview of the growth
of this Kingdom Jesus was proclaiming.
Matthew gave us 13 verses covering
the wilderness in Chapter 5.
Then he shifts to the Message of the Kingdom.
Matthew 4:23-25 took place over some time
and a lot could have been said…
But Matthew quickly sums them up to get
to the Message of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Matthew gave us 109 verses (Chapters 5,6,7)
telling us what Jesus preached about…
The Kingdom.
Jesus sat down with the crowd,
His disciples and began to teach.
We call this…
“The Sermon on the Mount”
Jesus started with a series of Blessings
to those who have the right character.
Matthew 5:3-11…
Blessed are…
the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, those who are persecuted because of righteousness
And these are the Blessings…
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven
for they will be comforted.
for they will inherit the earth.
for they will be filled.
for they will be shown mercy.
for they will see God.
for they will be called sons of God.
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
The Beatitudes are just the introduction
to Jesus’ Kingdom of Heaven Message.
The next two and a half chapters will open
the Gates of Heaven even wider.
Before we go on…
Maybe it would be a good idea
to compare our attitudes to those Jesus
spoke of on the mount.
Note the first one and the last one have
the same blessing…
For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
The citizens of Heaven are blessed.
Scripture Reading
Matthew 4:17-5:10 NIV
17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24 News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed, and he healed them. 25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.
5 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them, saying:
3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
