Matthew

Intro

The Book of Matthew is one of the four Gospels of Jesus Christ

Jesus’ life and ministry are recorded in the Books of

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

The Book of Matthew focuses on the Kingdom of Heaven

In the King James Version, the word Kingdom is used 56 times

If you have not read the Book of Matthew and come away with a greater understanding of the Kingdom of Heaven

Than take some time to read it again

You will discover not only what Heaven is like

But how the glory and beauty of the Kingdom of Heaven

Can be manifested in the earth

The prayer Jesus taught us to pray will come alive

"This, then, is how you should pray:

"'Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

 your kingdom come,

your will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.' Matthew 6:9-13

Matthew

Intro

The Book of Matthew is one

of the four Gospels of Jesus Christ.

Jesus’ life and ministry are recorded in the

Books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

The Book of Matthew focuses on

the Kingdom of Heaven.

In the King James Version,

the word Kingdom is used 56 times.

In the first 3 Chapters of Matthew…

We are introduced to Jesus and

His connection to the Old Testament.

Jesus’ natural lineage connects Him to…

Israel’s great King David and Abraham,

the start of the Jewish people, Israel.

A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ

the son of David, the son of Abraham:

Matthew 1:1

Jesus is also introduced as fulfillment

to prophecy, God’s spoken Word…

Through the Prophets as the One,

God would send to His people.

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"-which means, "God with us."

Matthew 1:22-23

In Chapter 2 we are first introduced to Jesus as King…

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

Matthew 2:1-2

Then the introduction from

the last prophet of the Old Covenant…

John the Baptist, who announces the Kingdom of Heaven

is near in preparation for Jesus Christ.

In those days John the Baptist came,

preaching in the Desert of Judea and saying,

"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."

Matthew 3:1-2

Last introduction is God, Himself…

And a voice from heaven said,

"This is my Son, whom I love;

with him I am well pleased."

Matthew 3:17

Chapters 3-7…

The Kingdom of Heaven is announced.

Jesus after being led by the Spirit

into the wilderness,

where He is tempted by the devil,

begins to preach the Kingdom.

From that time on Jesus began to preach,

"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."

Matthew 4:17

Chapter 5-7 is the famous Sermon on the Mount…

Where He preaches on the blessings of the Kingdom.

Chapters 8-10…

Jesus brings the Kingdom into peoples’ lives

and sends the 12 Disciples out to do the same.

Chapters 11-13…

We see the responses to Jesus as the Messiah

and the teaching of the Parables about the Kingdom.

Chapters 14-20…

We see the different expectations about

Jesus, the Messiah, and the coming Kingdom.

Chapters 21-25 is the clash of kingdoms.

Chapters 26-28 are the conclusion of the

Passover Meal taking on new meaning,

The crucifixion of the King of the Jews,

the Resurrection and the Great Commission

to carry out the expansion of the Kingdom.

There are many things you can see

as you read the book of Matthew…

But the key message is all about

the King and the Kingdom of Heaven.

The Bible Project is one of my favorite ministries.

The Bible Project takes each Book of the Bible

and illustrates it in just a few minutes,

giving a clear overview.

They also have done this with other important subjects

to the Christian faith.

I encourage you to check out the two

short videos on the Book of Matthew…

Scripture Reading

Matthew 1:1 NIV

1 A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ

the son of David, the son of Abraham:

Matthew 1:18-23 NIV

18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"-which means, "God with us."

Matthew 2:1-2 NIV

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."

Matthew 3:1-3 NIV

In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea 2 and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:

"A voice of one calling in the desert,

'Prepare the way for the Lord,

make straight paths for him.'"

Matthew 3:11-17 NIV

"I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"

15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented.

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
