Matthew
There is a Father in the Kingdom of Heaven
Jesus wants you to take a good look at His Father
So you will see His perfection and relationship He wants with you
The last verses of Chapter 5 are compelling verses showing us how much
God wants us all to be called sons of our Father in Heaven
"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you
that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.
He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:43-48
God loves us all and causes the sun and rain to come to the righteous
And unrighteous so that you may be sons of your Father in heaven
Jesus is compelling us to get to know the Father in Heaven
To have an ongoing daily relationship with Him
Jesus’ teachings are meant to show us how to become Children of God
And how to live as Sons and Daughters
Let’s get to know the Father of the Kingdom Heaven better
Matthew
There is a Father in the Kingdom of Heaven
Chapters 3-7…
The Kingdom of Heaven is announced
Jesus, after being led by the Spirit into
the wilderness where He is tempted by the Devil,
begins to preach the Kingdom…
From that time on Jesus began to preach,
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
Matthew 4:17
The Book of Matthew is a masterpiece
in the way it is put together.
It is a book about the Kingdom of Heaven.
When you think of a kingdom
you think of a king.
But Matthew does not introduce the King
until Chapter 18 and in a greater way Chapter 22.
Matthew introduces us to the Kingdom of Heaven
as having a Father.
But before telling us about the Father in Heaven,
he introduces us to earthly fathers in the first 4 chapters.
92 earthly fathers
(if I counted them right)
in Chapters 1 through 4.
John the Baptist makes an interesting
statement in Matthew 3:7-9…
When addressing the Pharisees and Sadducees
who laid their claim to fame on Abraham, as our father.
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
Matthew 3:7-9
In Matthew 4:22…
Just before the announcement of Jesus’ ministry
And Chapter 5…
The start of the Sermon on the Mount
(which is all about the Kingdom of Heaven)
We read of disciples leaving
their father to follow Jesus.
They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Matthew 4:21-22
It would seem intentional that Matthew is
trying to point out a journey or change from
earthly fathers to Heavenly Father.
Matthew’s bridge is when Jesus calls…
We must leave our earthly father
to receive our Heavenly Father.
19 times Jesus brings up the Father in Heaven
in the Sermon on the Mount.
47 times in the Book of Matthew
the Father of Heaven is mentioned.
As far as Matthew revealing
the King of Heaven…
Only a few times is the kings
mentioned until the later chapters.
Matthew points out King Herod
was looking for the King of the Jew
when speaking to the Magi.
Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount says…
Don’t swear by heaven the throne of God or earth
the foot stool of God or Jerusalem the city of the Great King.
It is not until Chapter 18…
Where Jesus tells a parable of the Kingdom of Heaven
that we see the mention of a Kingdom of Heaven King.
It is not until Chapter 21…
The King is properly introduced.
"Say to the Daughter of Zion,
'See, your king comes to you
Matthew 21:5
It is at the end of the book
and Jesus’ ministry…
That Jesus reveals the King of Heaven.
Matthew from Chapters 21 to 27…
Uses the word king.
So, what is the take away from this?
There is a King of the Kingdom of Heaven.
This King according to John in the Book of Revelation
will rule and reign for ever and ever.
But Matthew plays so much more emphasis
on the Father of Heaven.
Jesus seems to spend more time on wanting us
to know Heaven is for family.
God wants to be our Father.
For us, who have been born of earthly fathers,
whether good or bad,
the God of Heaven invites us to be His children.
Our earthly fathers can only offer us
the temporary things of life…
But the Father of Heaven offers eternal life.
Jesus spends more time teaching us
about the Father of Heaven
than the King of Heaven.
Because the Kings of Heaven is King of kings…
He will be king whether we willingly submit or not.
But the heavenly Father will only be
the Father of those who choose Him,
unlike our earthly fathers.
Jesus wants you to take a good look at His Father…
So you will see His perfection and relationship
He wants with you.
The last verses of Chapter 5…
Are compelling verses
Showing us how much God wants us all
to be called sons of our Father in Heaven.
"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.
He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Matthew 5:43-48
God loves us all and causes the sun and rain
to come to the righteous and unrighteous so…
That you may be sons of your Father in heaven.
Jesus is compelling us to get to know the Father in Heaven…
To have an ongoing daily relationship with Him.
Jesus’ teachings are meant to show us how…
To become Children of God
and how to live as Sons and Daughters.
Let’s get to know the Father
of the Kingdom Heaven better.
Scripture Reading
Matthew 5:20-48 NIV
20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.
23 "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.
25 "Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. 26 I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
27 "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
31 "It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.' 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery.
33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' 34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
38 "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
