James
Untamable and Deadly
James saw the untamed tongue was the environment of his time
Not only were unbelievers speaking evil, believers were speaking evil
I don’t use the word hate very often because it is so strong, but I hate election years
Why? Because our speech is all too easily perverted.
We eagerly gossip and spread unsubstantiated
And even false rumors about other people.
I avoid responding to comments by friends and family
Why? Because the political environment is full of untamed tongues
We enjoy assaulting people rather than the issues
It is not just the ignorant and unlearned
It is the leaders of this nation who prove they cannot tame the tongue
As Christians, no matter which side of the political line …Tame your tongue!
Don’t gossip, spread unsubstantiated and false rumors…Tame your tongue!
There is something more important than America and its elections
I will vote and do my best to be an outstanding American
But there is something more important
It is the Kingdom of God, full of Righteousness, Peace and Joy
Untamable and Deadly
God said…
"Let us make man in our image, in our likeness,
and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air,
over the livestock, over all the earth,
and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
Genesis 1:26
We have ruled over…
All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea
We have tamed them and domesticated them.
More homes then ever have pets of all kinds.
The love and respect for animals is amazingly high.
With all our accomplishments of taming animals,
we have not been able to tame the tongue.
James 3: 6 says our tongue is the devil’s
tool corrupting the whole person.
James 3:7 says we cannot tame the tongue it is
a restless evil full of deadly poison.
Like a venomous snake.
2020 is an election year.
Like past election years, the uncontrolled
tongue is released with deadly poisons.
Even though 2020 seems to win the prize
for the evilest tongue, it is not
just 2020, it has always been this way.
Things and people we do not like,
we speak evil of.
James saw this was the environment of his time.
Not only were unbelievers speaking evil of
Christians, but Christians were speaking evil.
I don’t use the word hate very often because
it is so strong, but I hate election years.
Why? Because our speech is all too easily perverted.
We eagerly gossip and spread unsubstantiated
and even false rumors about other people.
I avoid responding to comments by friends and family.
I resist correcting posts on Facebook.
Why? Because the political
environment is full of untamed tongues.
We enjoy assaulting people rather than the issues.
It is not just the ignorant and unlearned…
It is the leaders of this nation who
prove they cannot tame the tongue.
As Christians, no matter which side of
the political line you are on…
Tame your tongue!
Don’t gossip, spread unsubstantiated and false rumors…
Tame your tongue!
Yes, Christian values, moral issues clearly seen
in God’s Word are under attack with evil venom…
But tame your tongue!
As Christians we are under attack just
like the people James was writing to.
That is why we need to hear
James’ words to tame the tongue.
I feel the poisons in my mouth as I…
Hear the late night comedians
Watch the news
Listen to politicians
Read Facebook posts
Talk to friends, family and strangers
It is said this election is the most important
election ever for America and I believe it.
But there is something more important
than America and it’s elections…
I will vote and do my best to
be an outstanding American.
But there is something more important…
It is the Kingdom of God.
That is the Christian’s first responsibility and loyalty.
The Kingdom of God is Righteousness,
Peace, and Joy in the Holy Spirit.
Romans 14:17
Those who are led by the Holy Spirit
are the mature Children of God.
Romans 8:14
The only way to stop an evil tongue
is to submit it to the Holy Spirit.
If we listen to the Holy Spirit within
us instead of our fleshly desires…
We will tame the tongue
and speak the truth in love.
We will speak what is righteous.
We will speak words that lead to peace and joy.
Let the Holy Spirit tame your tongue…
Because there is deadly poisons
and evil on all our tongues.
Scripture Reading
James 3:7-8 NIV
7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
