The Blessing
Blessing the Children
So many children do not know the blessing
Will you be like Jesus
Take time to put your arms around a child
Speak affirming, positive words
Let them know the blessings the Lord has
for them
The future He has for their life
What is the image you get when you read about Jesus
laying His hands on the children to bless them?
This picture is quite amazing.
There seems to be a back drop if you tie in
the verses just before the children sit on His lap.
The subject is divorce.
The breakup of the home.
I don’t want to debate divorce,
I want to look at
blessing children.
Divorce and the things that lead up
to it bring curses on the children.
With the backdrop of dysfunctional families,
Jesus says, “Let the children come to me”
The picture is…
“He took the children
in his arms,
put his hands on them
and blessed them.”
Here is how I see this picture…
I see Jesus’ arms no different than our
arms holding and hugging the children.
I see His hands not with electricity from heaven,
but a compassionate
touch.
The arms and hands are reassuring, as the physical
touch establishes an inter connection and security.
The word blessed is referring to speaking.
The words of Jesus are words of affirmation,
affirming of who they are as created by God.
Words of foretelling, words that give the child
a picture of God’s future for them.
These words of blessing reveal the security of
knowing God loves them and is with them.
They are positive words that are not looking
at today’s weaknesses or failures.
They are words revealing what
God has planned for their future.
This word blessed derives from the Greek word “lego”.
“Lego” is a verb
meaning to “lay” forth
in words systematic or set discourse.
You can’t think of this Greek word “lego” and
not think of the famous Lego building blocks.
These interlocking pieces of plastic teach children
how to construct and assemble many objects.
Words of blessing are to do the same thing.
I love this picture of Jesus blessing the children.
I believe this picture is to reveal our role with the
children.
We have the same power and ability to bless the children.
Look around and see how difficult it is for the children.
Look at the challenges our children face
because of divorce and sex out of marriage.
We need to speak the positive words of blessing
into the ears of the children like never before.
As we do that, we should give a helping hand to those parents
who see life is harder because of choices they have made.
God wants them to be blessed, too.
Scripture Reading
Mark 10:10-16 NIV
10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked
Jesus about this. 11 He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries
another woman commits adultery against her. 12 And if she divorces her husband
and marries another man, she commits adultery."
13 People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him
touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was
indignant. He said to them, "Let
the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God
belongs to such as these. 15 I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive
the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." 16 And he took the children in his arms, put
his hands on them and blessed them.
