Matthew
Sons of the Father in Heaven Love
Matthew 5:43-45
"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.
In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, He shares with us the Father’s perfection
And shows us how to become sons of the Father in heaven
The first one is this
Sons are loving to their enemies because the Father is loving to them
Matthew 5:43-48
Agapa love is when you lose all the reasons to love and yet love
Love, hate relationships are hard
Sons and daughters of their Heavenly Father do the hard thing
They love the world as their Father in Heaven does
Matthew
Sons of the Father in Heaven Love
Chapters 3-7…
The Kingdom of Heaven is announced
Jesus, after being led by the Spirit into the wilderness
where He is tempted by the Devil,
began to preach the Kingdom.
From that time on Jesus began to preach,
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”
Matthew 4:17
Polls tell us the world is getting angrier.
I am always cautious about polls
because polls are made and intended to support
some persons or groups’ agenda.
When I see this imputation,
it makes me angry.
I don’t know about the numbers
in the poll on world anger…
But I confess I am dealing
with a lot of anger.
As I talk with friends and acquaintances
I hear anger…
Anger with government and political agenda.
Anger over the heart beat of a baby
verses the heartbeat of the mother.
Anger over sex identity issues.
Crime is no longer an inner city problem,
Farmers and people living in the suburbs
are having to protect their equipment, cars,
and home with security cameras.
Gun sales are up because people don’t believe
law enforcement can protect them.
Maybe we should say it this way…
IF YOU ARE NOT ANGRY, YOU SHOULD BE!!!
I am angry,
but I do not like being angry.
We have good reason to be angry,
but it is not fun.
Anger is toxic.
It can control us and damage our relationships,
in the home, work place, in fact no matter where you go
it can make a good day a bad day.
Anger produces hate.
We must recognize there are things
we should get angry about and hate.
The apostle Paul says…
"In your anger do not sin":
Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,
and do not give the devil a foothold.
Ephesians 4:26-28
This is a great verse…
One we should all have posted on not
only our refrigerators, but cars, work spaces, etc.
Maybe the best thing is to memorize it
and say it to ourselves several times a day.
But how do we do it?
How do we handle our anger
and need to be angry without sinning?
So often anger gives the devil a place
to start a war of destruction.
Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount
deals with anger and hate.
He gives us the Kingdom of Heaven principles.
In Matthew 5:21,
dealing with anger is more than a law not to kill.
It is control of your language.
Anyone who says to his brother, Raca,
is in danger of hell's fire.
Matthew 5:22
The word “Raca is the word “contempt” meaning…
The feeling that a person or a thing is
beneath consideration, worthless, or deserving scorn.
DON’T CONSIDER THE ONE YOU
ARE ANGRY WITH WORTHLESS.
Jesus takes a deeper dive into anger
and hate in Matthew 5:43-48…
"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Jesus tells us what to do with our anger and hate
and it is not the answer we are looking for.
It is not the way we want to vent our anger and hate,
even righteous anger.
Jesus tells us in one word what to do…
LOVE.
(If you did not see the little dot
at the end of LOVE it is a “Period”)
We will see this in Matthew, Chapter 6 verse 10…
A little later, but it is the underline principle
to the message of the Kingdom of Heaven…
Your kingdom come, your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Matthew 6:10
Every issue we face, needs to be looked at
the way it is handled in Heaven.
There are enough scriptures to tell us
God in Heaven gets angry and hates.
Deuteronomy 9:7, Psalms 103:8, Proverbs 6:16-19
We can point to the scriptures about destroying the wicked
and sinners and miss the point of the Kingdom Message.
I am sure you heard of this verse.
John 3:16-18.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
God demonstrated His love to
all He hates and is angry with.
A demonstration of giving the One He loved.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
Jesus, concerning the issue of anger and hate,
says look at the Father in Heaven and…
Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Matthew 5:48
How is that worked out?
God, the Father…
Causes the rain and the sun to shine upon both
the righteous and unrighteous
Matthew 5:45
God, the Father, sent His Son
and He loved those who did not love Him.
Jesus greeted everyone,
He went to everyone.
Jesus did not just go to His friends.
And He asks us to do the same
in the Great Commission.
We are to go into all the world
and share the message of Heaven which is,
God loves you.
In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount,
He shares with us…
The Father’s perfection and shows us
how to become sons of the Father in heaven.
The first one is this…
Sons are loving to their enemies
because the Father is loving to them
Matthew 5:43-48
Agapa love is when you lose all
the reasons to love and yet love.
Love, hate relationships are hard.
Sons and daughters of their Heavenly Father
do the hard thing…
They love the world as their Father in Heaven does.
